Lagoon Bridge to pave the way to Land Between the Lakes

(Source: KYTC)

CALLOWAY COUNTY, KY (KFVS)- Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has announced the beginning of work on the first phase of a project to build two needed bridges paving the way to Land Between The Lakes.

Crews in the past week began clearing brush and trees to make way for construction of a bridge to span a lagoon on the western shore of Kentucky Lake.

According to the governor's office, the $24 million Lagoon Bridge will actually be a bridge to a bridge. It will serve as an approach to a new, four-lane bridge that will be built over the main lake to replace the 81-year-old Eggners Ferry Bridge.

"Construction of the Lagoon Bridge is a giant step toward realization of a long-held dream for the Jackson Purchase and Pennyrile regions – replacement bridges for both the Eggners Ferry Crossing on Kentucky Lake and the bridge over Lake Barkley at Canton," Gov. Beshear said.

Study: Tourism spending in western Ky. rises in 2012

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -  An annual survey of tourism spending in Kentucky shows an increase in the Western Waterlands region in 2012. All nine of the state’s tourism regions registered gains for 2012 compared with 2011, according to Western Waterland in Grand Rivers.

“Just in our region alone with the 15 westernmost counties, we had a direct economic impact of approximately $498 million, a 5.5% increase from 2011,” said Marinel Larkin, Executive Director of Kentucky’s Western Waterland. “The dollars spent by visitors have strengthened our region’s economy by creating jobs, supporting local businesses from gas stations to retail stores and generating tax revenues to support our community.”
