MSU fire victim's mother reacts to new charges

Gail Minger says word of new charges in connection with the 1998 fire at Murray State University that claimed the life of her son hit her harder than she thought it would.

"It really dredged up a lot of very deep emotion," Gail Minger said.

Minger spoke by phone from Richmond Kentucky, where her Michael Minger Memorial Foundation kicked off a campus fire safety program Thursday at Eastern Kentucky University.

"I think it (emotion) came from restoring hope that there is justice in this world, or at least an attempt to seek justice," Minger said.

Minger started the foundation in her son's name in 2005, four years after a jury deadlocked on murder charges against Jerry Walker.

Jerry W. Walker, now 35, faces new charges of manslaughter, arson, assault and wanton endangerment.

Kentucky State Police say Walker turned himself in to authorities Thursday morning.

U.S. Coast Guard offers boating safety tips for hunters

U.S. Coast Guard offers boating safety tips for hunters

(KFVS) - The United States Coast Guard is offering boating safety tips for hunters.

The Coast Guard says capsizing and falling overboard into cold water are major hazards for hunters. During hunting seasons, most waters are cold enough for a serious hypothermia threat.

They say responsible hunters need to be aware of the dangers and follow a few simple rules to make hunting on the water safer and more enjoyable. The tips include:

  • Leave a float plan with someone at home, describing where you are going, who you are with and when you expect to return.
  • Transport firearms to the boat unloaded, cased, muzzle first, with the action open.
  • Always wear an approved and properly fitted life jacket when in a boat.
  • Carry a throwable flotation device in case someone falls overboard.
  • Stow visual distress signals on board.
  • Know the weather forecast for the area. High winds can be dangerous.
