CCHS freshman to attend summer film, arts seminar

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Calloway County High School freshman Will Van Horn will attend the 10-day Eisenhower Leadership Summit for Film and the Arts starting July 6.

The program will be at the University of California at Los Angeles. While attending, Van Horn will collaborate with other students to finish a two-day film project while working with staff from the New York Film Academy on location at the Universal Studios back lot sets.

Other activities include small group discussions with professional actors and an opportunity to explore options for a career in filmmaking. On day eight, the group will visit the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in the Simi Valley.

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Calloway County High School and Middle School band students have been named to the high school Quad-State Band and the middle school Quad-State Band.

Calloway Co. High School, Middle School band competed for All-District honors

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Band members of Calloway County High School and Middle School competed in both concert and symphonic band categories for All-District honors.

Calloway County students named to the high school All-District band include: Luke Beam, Daniel Shepard, Henry Rogers, Juna Harvey, Shea Pierce, Seth Enoch, Katie Saylor, Alex Nance, Shari Okuda, Greg Wood, Kristen Clayton, Chad Thompson, Emily Crouse, Jennie Edwards, Reagen Meredith and Courtney McCoy. CCHS Laker band performing at Kentucky Derby parade

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The Calloway County High School Laker band will perform in the Kentucky Derby Festival Pegasus Parade in Louisville, Ky. on Thursday.

The Laker band was one of about a dozen chosen from hundreds of applicants.

The Pegasus Parade is the oldest derby event and is held annually on the Thursday before the Kentucky Derby. It starts at Campbell, parades down Broadway and ends at 9th Street.

The parade will feature colorful floats, marching bands, giant inflatable cartoon characters, equestrians and celebrities.

Registration to begin for half marathon and expo in Murray

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Registration for the Half Marathon and Expo will begin on April 15 at the Center for Health and Wellness Gym.

The event will be from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and late registration for the first ever Murray Half Marathon will be available.

Runners will also have the opportunity to pick up race packets, paritcipate in free diabetes and osteporosis screenings and learn new pre-race and post-race nutrition and fitness tips.

The Center for Health and Wellness is located at 716 Poplar Street in Murray, Ky.

Former Olympian hosts running school at Center for Health and Wellness

Former Olympian hosts running school at Center for Health and Wellness

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - A former Olympian, now motivational speaker and author, will host a running school on April 15.

Jeff Galloway will host the three hour class at the Center for Health and Wellness at the Murray-Calloway County Hospital. The class will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

It costs $99 and space is limited so only the first 50 to register will get seats.

All proceeds from the class go to the Murray-Calloway Endowment for Healthcare which raises money to suppor the residential hospice house, rural physician education program, a new equipment fund and unrestricted general fund.

You can register for the class by calling the Endowment Office at 270-762-1800.

A one hour running assessment will follow the class if participants want to stay.

CCHS students fold over 1,000 paper cranes

CCHS students fold over 1,000 paper cranes

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Japanese language students in Masayo Nakamura's classes at Calloway County High School folded over 1,000 paper cranes to support Japan's relief effort.

The cranes will be submitted to the Students Rebuild project of Architecture for Humanity.

The Bezos Family Foundation has pledged a donation of $2 per crane up to $200,000. Cash donations of over $250 have also been collected at the high school for Japan relief.

Students in the History and Appreciation of the Visual and Performing Arts class taught by Ross Kelly, also participated in folding the paper cranes. Art students in Sandy Sasso's class are selling artwork to benefit the relief efforts.
