Students from Southwest Calloway Elementary competed at Regional Governor's Cup

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Southwest Calloway Elementary School students competed in the Regional Governor's Cup competition on March 19.

The competition was at Jonathan Creek Elementary. The Southwest Lakers Academic team placed second among the Future Problem Solvers and fourth in the Quick Recall Competition.

Kati Beth Wyant won first place and Kirsten Houston won fifth place in the categories of Written Assessment and Science Assessment.

Katie Allen won fourth place and Suzanna Grady won fifth place in the Language Arts Assessment.

Avery Wilmurth won third place in the Arts and Humanities Assessment.

The team finished fourth in the overall scoring.

Speech team at CCMS ends season with success

Speech team at CCMS ends season with success

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The Calloway County Middle School speech team ended their season with six state tournament semi-finalists.

The team attended the Speech League State Tournament in Bowling Green, Ky. where 19 students competed in the event March 18-19.

Clara Arnold placed sixth in the state in Poetry Interpretation.

The six semi-finalists included improvisational duo team Andrea McCormack and Stephanie McClain, duo acting team Jami Foster and Holland Tetrev, Julie Revell in broadcasting and Marlee Barrett in solo acting. The semi-finalists ranked among the top 18 performances in the state.

Other members of the team include Audree Harper, Koby Springer, Halee Bergman, Tyler Sirls, Tanna Roberson, Sarai McCallon, Cheyenne Bucy, Hailey Robinson, Kalea Anderson, Kaylee Lax, Sam Morehead and Maddie Rose.

The team is coached by Jennifer Dunnaway, Eric Klotz and Mitchell Hultman.

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Calloway County High School students studying Japanese won first place in the Japanese division at the 2011 Regional Foreign Language Festival.

Each student took first or second place in almost every event.

Actor from Georgetown College presented living history lesson at CCMS

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Director of Theatre at Georgetown College portrayed Henry Clay in a living history lesson at Calloway County Middle School.

Director George McGee played the Kentucky statesman and introduced himself to the eighth grade students. McGee presented the lesson by Kentucky Chautauqua and the Kentucky Humanities Council.

'Popcorn, Pillows and Pages' a hit at Southwest Calloway Elementary

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Students were able to write and illustrate their own books recently at family reading night.

The family night was called Popcorn, Pillows, and Pages and was held at Southwest Calloway County Elementary School.

Calloway Co. middle school, high school speech teams come home champions

Calloway Co. middle school, high school speech teams come home champions

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Calloway County Middle School and high school speech teams won the championships at the Regional Speech competition last weekend.

The middle school Lakers took first place in broadcasting, improvisational duo, interpretation of literature, poetry, prose and storytelling categories. They took second in broadcasting, duo acting, interpretation of literature, prose and solo categories.

The high school scored 103 sweepstakes points to take them to the Regional Championship.

Several students qualified for the Kentucky High School Speech League State Tournament on March 10-12 in Bowling Green. The tournament will be at Western Kentucky State University.

8th grader wins CCMS Geography Bee

8th grader wins CCMS Geography Bee

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Eighth grader Matthew Hiter won the Calloway County Middle School Geography Bee recently.

Hiter won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee. The school-level was the first round and students answered oral questions on geography.

Hiter also won a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. He will go on to compete at the State Tournament.

Seventh grader Jose Villeda came in secound at the bee. Eighth graders Tristan Cole and Courtney Milstead were also finalists.

Thousands of schools around the U.S. and in five U.S. territories participated. Up to 100 of the top scorers for each state will be competing in their State Tournament.

State winners are eligible for the national championship and its first prize, a $25,000 college scholarship. The national championship will be in Washington, D.C. in May.
