Kentucky State Police escort National Christmas Tree

Kentucky State Police escort National Christmas Tree

(KFVS) – The Kentucky State Police escorted the National Capitol Christmas tree through Kentucky on Monday, November 19.

The Christmas tree, an Engelmann Spruce, was harvested in Meeker, Colo. on Nov. 2.

The tree stands 74 feet tall, and has a span of approximately 25 feet.

The 74-year-old tree is on a three week, cross country, journey from Colorado to Washington, D.C. where it will be put on the Capitol Lawn for display.

KSP Troopers took over the escort duties from the Illinois State Police as the eight vehicle convoy entered Kentucky on I-24.

The convoy conducted a scheduled fuel stop in Paducah, Ky. before resuming its trip to the Nation’s Capital. KSP Troopers escorted the tree to the Tennessee state line, where the Tennessee Highway Patrol took the lead of the convoy.

Local, small business Black Friday sales

Local, small business Black Friday sales

With the holidays coming up fast, Black Friday will be here before we know it.

Every year we hear about the craziness at big name stores like Walmart, Target, etc. As a change of pace, we want to hear from local, small businesses and others in the community!

Will you be having any Black Friday sales or deals? If so, what are they? What are some tips you can give to people in your community wanting to shop more "local?"

If you're a local restaurant, will you have different hours and specials to cater to the Black Friday shoppers?

Is anyone in the community: churches, community centers, etc. offering babysitting for those that will be out in the early a.m. for shopping?

You can e-mail Amber Ruch, County News Web Producer at aruch@kfvs12.com. The information you provide will be featured online and on-air. Make sure to include a picture or two of your business!

Send holiday cheer to troops with 'Holiday Mail for Heroes' program

(KFVS) - The American Red Cross will be collecting and distributing cards that send words of encouragement, gratitude and cheer to America's heroes for the holiday season.

The Red Cross is inviting the public to send messages of thanks and holiday cheer until Dec. 7 by mailing them to:

Holiday Mail for Heroes
P.O. Box 5456
Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

To ensure that cards are delivered on time for the holidays, the Red Cross says they must be postmarked no later than Dec. 7. Individuals are asked to refrain from sending "care packages," monetary donations or using glitter or any other kinds of inserts with the cards.

According to the Red Cross, the company Pitney Bowes Inc. receives cards at the special Holiday Mail post office box, and screens them for hazardous materials. The company screens, packages and ships the cards at no charge.
