Title (Max 100 Characters)
CALLOWAY COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - In celebration of Earth Day, an environmental education program has been scheduled for third through fifth grade students in the Calloway County School District on Tuesday, April 17 at North Calloway Elementary at 9:30 am.
Students from East and Southwest Calloway Elementary Schools will be bused to this event.
The program is provided in cooperation with Murray State and features Carl Lombardi as the Dr. Seuss character- Mr. Lorax. Lombardi comes to Calloway County Schools because of its participation and membership in the West Kentucky Environmental Education Consortium that is a part of the Center for Environmental Education at Murray State University. Calloway's membership in the environmental education consortium has provided it with opportunities to have such programming over the past thirty-five years.
From Lombardi’s biography:
"Carl Lombardi is a gifted writer and actor. He has spent a number of years with Poetry Alive, where he has used poetry as a way to get children to think and act out what they hear said by the writer across the United States. Currently a librarian in Winston-Salem, NC, he has participated in a number of programs for the Center for Environmental Education at Murray State University and the summer institute that takes place at Land Between the Lakes. He has also provided programming in acting out poetry at the North American Association for Environmental Education, supported by the Albert I. Pierce Foundation.
His enthusiasm and spirit, his excitement is so engaging that all of his audience participates in poetry, writing, and acting. In his presentation of the Lorax he is not in costume, but before the program has ended participants believe HE IS THE LORAX.”
The program will last approximately 45 minutes and afterwards, 300 oak tree seedlings will be distributed.
