Sleeve gastrectomy support group

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Western Baptist Hospital's Bariatric Solutions will offer a sleeve gastrectomy support group on Tuesday, July 12.

The group is for patients and family members for those that have had the sleeve gastrectomy procedure. They will meet at 11:30 a.m. in the Bariatrics office and again at 5:30 p.m. at the Center for Health and Wellness.

The bariatric office is located at 403 E in the Medical Arts building and the center is located at 716 Poplar Street in Murray.

High school FFA Chapter returns from leadership training

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Fifteen members of the Calloway County High School FFA Chapter returned Friday, July 1 from a week at the Kentucky FFA Leadership Training Center in Hardinsburg, Ky.

The Lakers joined more than 1,500 FFA members from across the state as they competed in athletics, FFA skills and leadership.

FFA members from Calloway County received recognition in every category and in all events except two.

The following students won awards:

Free lipid screening by Health Express

Free lipid screening by Health Express

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Health Express will offer free lipid screenings at Lowe's on July 5.

The screenings are free to communities and offered to detect diseases in the earliest stages when there are often no symptoms. They will be from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

According to the Murray Calloway County Hospital, under most circumstances cholesterol and triglyceride levels should be checked every five years. These screenings are free to every Health Express patron once every five years. More frequent testing requires a doctor's written prescription and costs $15.

Annual screenings are recommended for diabetes patients.

The screening requires a 12-hour fast, which means no food or drink, except for water.

HeartSafe community program launches

CALLOWAY COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky Department for Public Health's Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program will be working with communities to improve chances of survival for stroke and heart attack victims.

DPH, the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services and the American Heart Association will launch the HeartSafe Community Program.

“By taking action, you can help save a life in your community,” said Dr. William Hacker, DPH commissioner.  “We are working directly with Kentucky communities to increase access to care, public awareness and the prevention of heart disease."

To become a part of the HeartSafe Community, applicants must review criteria for the program, complete an application and mail or fax the application to DPH.

Award-winning Army Band to perform concert series

Award-winning Army Band to perform concert series

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The 202nd Army Band with the Kentucky National Guard will be performing a two-week concert series in the Purchase Area.

The forty-piece band includes musicians who form a rock band, jazz combo, marching band, Dixieland band, woodwind quintet and brass quartet. The band is led by Chief Warrant Officer Greg Stepp.

The band will also be recruiting additional performers and musicians. For more information you can visit them online.

Murray Sanitation Dept. closed for Independence Day

Murray Sanitation Dept. closed for Independence Day

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The city of Murray says the Sanitation Department will be closed on Monday, July 4 for the Independence Day holiday.

The city said all Monday customers should have their containers out for pick up on Tuesday morning.

All other customers should set their containers out on their regularly scheduled day.

The city of Murray Transfer Station and City Hall Offices will also be closed on Monday.

Road closings for Freedom Fest

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The city of Murray has announced road closings for Freedom Fest on Friday, July 1 and Saturday, July 2.

The roads will be closed from 5 a.m. on Friday until 6 p.m. on Saturday. Closings include:

  • Maple Street - from 4th to 6th
  • 4th Street - from Main to Poplar
  • 5th Street - from Main to Poplar (Saturday, July 2 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.)
  • Main Street - from 12th to Industrial
  • 10th Street - from Payne to Main
  • Olive Street - from 10th to 8th
  • Sharpe Street - from 10th 8th
  • Payne Street - from 10th to 8th
