Three-part series at MCCH titled 'Obesity: It's More Than Aesthetics'

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The Murray-Calloway County Hospital will hold a three-part series called "Obesity: It's More Than Aesthetics," starting Tuesday, January 22 from 12 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.

You can join the MCCH Bariatrics Team to confront the truth about obesity and the real dangers it imposes. This series will also address your options for a safe way out. All sessions will be held the Murray State University Curris Center on the third floor in the Barkley Room from 12-12:45 p.m.

Part one is Tuesday, Jan. 22, titled “The Dangers of Obesity” and presented by Rhonda Boone, APRN. Part two is Tuesday, Feb. 19, titled “Non-Surgical Weight Loss Options” and presented by Rebecca Wright, RD, LD. Part three is Tuesday, March 12, titled “Surgical Weight Loss Options” and presented by Brian Swain, MD, FACS.

Filmmaker Spike Lee to speak at Murray State lecture series

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Murray State University has announced the featured speaker for their 2013 Presidential Lecture Series will be African-American filmmaker Spike Lee.

The lecture will be on Monday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m., in Murray State’s Lovett Auditorium. The lecture is free. MSU students, faculty and staff, and the general public are encouraged to attend.

Fearless, honest and dedicated to his cause, Lee does not shy away from speaking his mind. In his lecture, “An Evening with Spike Lee: America Through My Lens,” Lee discusses the history, current status and future of America as he sees it. Touching on race relations, stereotypes in Hollywood, and social and political agendas, Lee leaves it all on the table as only he can.

Registration open for 2013 Great Central U.S. ShakeOut

(KFVS) - Registration for the 2013 Great Central U.S. ShakeOut is now open.

The next ShakeOut will take place on Feb. 7 at 10:15 a.m. Organizers say this date coincides with the anniversary of the Feb. 7, 1812 earthquake near New Madrid, Mo. They say this earthquake was one of at least three magnitude 7 or greater events that struck in the winter of 1811-1812, and forever changed the landscape of the region.

'Duck Dynasty' coming to Calloway Co. High School May 11

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The Calloway County Football team recently announced the stars of the hit TV show on A&E, “Duck Dynasty,” will be in Murray for an event to benefit Calloway County Football on May 11.

“We are thrilled to have this event and these great men in our school," head football coach Brad Lawson said. "Duck Dynasty is one of the most popular shows on television now and to have them in our gym benefiting our football program, it’s just amazing. It’s just going to be a great night for Calloway County High School, our program, and our community."

Scheduled to appear are Phil Robertson, Willie Robertson and Si Robertson.

As a high school athlete, Phil Robertson was all-state in football, baseball, and track and attended Louisiana Tech on a football scholarship. There he played ahead of four-time Super Bowl winning and Hall of Fame quarterback from the Pittsburgh Steelers Terry Bradshaw.

KSP, Post 1 to hold Citizens Police Academy

KSP, Post 1 to hold Citizens Police Academy

(KFVS) - Kentucky State Police, Post One, is now accepting applications for the 2013 Kentucky State Police Citizens Police Academy.

The 10-week academy is slated to begin on Feb. 26 and conclude April 30. 

Students will meet Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., where they will learn about the many facets of the Kentucky State Police including patrol, criminal investigations, and drug investigations.

Students will also get to take part in simulated law enforcement training during the course.

The Academy's first week will be held at the Kentucky State Police Post on Highway 45 in Graves County. 

The following nine weeks of the academy will be held at the Graves County Board of Education building located at 2290 State Route 121 North in Mayfield.

Smoking cessation program offered at MCCH

Smoking cessation program offered at MCCH

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The Murray-Calloway County Hospital will host a Cooper Clayton Smoking Cessation event on January 8.

According to the hospital, the Cooper-Clayton method to stop smoking is a 13–week program that provides weekly education sessions in a supportive environment. The program encourages the use of nicotine replacement therapy and will be held every Tuesday for 13 consecutive weeks.

  • Newspaper (bundled)
