Lap band support group meeting in Murray

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The Murray-Calloway County Hospital will host a lab band support group on Thursday, April 7.

The group will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the Center for Health and Wellness in Murray, Ky.

MCCH offering free screenings at Health Express

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The Murray-Calloway County Hospital is offering free blood sugar screenings, cholesterol and triglyceride, blood pressure and pulse checks on Wednesday, April 6.

The screenings will be from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the MCCH's Health Express. No food or drink for 12 hours before the cholesterol screening.

Health report shows health rankings of Calloway Co.

CALLOWAY COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The second annual County Health Rankings report has recently been released from the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The report shows communities how they rank health-wise based on health outcomes and health factors.

Health outcomes represent how health a county is using mortality and morbidity rates.

Mortality represents the length of life based on a measure of premature death.

Mayfield Lions Club hosting Zumba benefit for Relay for Life

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - The Mayfield Lions Club's Relay for Life team will sponsor a Zumba night on Tuesday, April 12.

Zumba will be at the Mayfield's First United Methodist Church. It costs $10 at the door, all proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. Instructor Jody Templeton volunteered her time to teach the class.

Lowes Elementary 1st grader benefits from iPad

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - A first grader at Lowes Elementary School, born with no arms, will benefit from a donated iPad.

Natalie Baldwin was born with Amelia Syndrome. When Scott Green and Jim Heath of Bayer CropScience heard she could benefit from an iPad, they donated one.

"This iPad will lessen some of her challenges," Cheryl Goodman, principal at Lowes Elementary said. "Especially when she gets tired, this modern technology can be used to help."

According to Goodman, Baldwin is determined, independent and able to do whatever other students do because her parents raised her that way.

Mercury spill at Calloway County High School after thermometer breaks

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Students were removed from a science classroom at Calloway County High School after a thermometer containing mercury broke.

Science teachers and school administrators removed the students around 8:15 a.m. Monday morning and began to carefully clean the spill.

Officials from the county health department and the Kentucky Department of Environmental Protection were notified as standard procedure.

Around noon the classroom was swept using sensitive mercury detection equipment and declared safe by Mac Cann, environmental control supervisor from the Owensboro regional office of the D.E.P. Cann also took and disposed of some material used in the clean up.

Calloway County Superintendent Ken Bargo commended the high school staff for their quick and thorough response to the spill.
