WKCTC students named to 2013 All-USA Academic Team

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - West Kentucky Community and Technical College student Danielle Dukes and former WKCTC student Dylan Green were recently recognized as WKCTC nominees for the 2013 All-USA Academic Team.

The All-USA Academic Team, sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, USA Today and the American Association of Community Colleges, recognizes exceptional students at the nation’s community colleges. Each year, outstanding students are selected by the presidents of community and technical colleges to participate in the team. The selected students represent the highest level of achievement in the areas of scholarship, service, and leadership.

GCHS, FFA program welcomes student teacher from Murray State

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - A senior Agricultural Science with Agricultural Education certification major from Murray State University arrived at Graves County High School recently to work with the students and teachers in the Agricultural Science and Technology Department and the FFA program for the next 16 weeks.

Ashley Burks, 21, is working under the guidance of cooperating teacher Richard Horn to learn all aspects of a successful agricultural science and technology program at the high school level. Burks will strive to become proficient in teaching a variety of classes in the career and technical education area, as well as in assisting students with leadership development in the FFA organization and with career-focused experiential programs.

Upon completion of the student teaching experience, Burks will return to Murray to participate in commencement exercises at Murray State where she will earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Sciences.

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County High School students who are members of the school’s chapter of the Distributive Education Clubs of America recently participated in the Region I competition at Murray State University and won 58 total awards.

Also receiving honors were GCHS students elected to serve as 2013-14 Region I DECA officers. They include  Chloe Hohlbein, President; Hannah Purcell, Secretary; and Shara Elder, Parliamentarian.

Graves County's Eli Wilson signs with Murray State University Racers

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County football player Eli Wilson signed a letter of intent on National Signing Day, Feb. 6, to play for Murray State University.

A three-year starter for the Eagles, Wilson was named as an offensive lineman to the 2012 First Teams of the Courier-Journal, the All-West Kentucky Conference, the Pepsi/Paducah Sun All-Region, and the Bluegrasspreps.com State Team.

He also was named as a defensive lineman to the Second Team of the 2012 Associated Press All-State Team. He was recognized with the Graves County High School Football Mark Shelton Leadership Award.

Graves at Calloway girls’ high school basketball games rescheduled

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Graves County at Calloway County girls’ high school basketball games have been moved from this Tuesday evening to Thursday evening, January 17.

The junior varsity game will start at 6 p.m. and the varsity game at approximately 7:30 p.m. Thursday, all according to Graves athletic director Doug Gloyd.

2013 WKCTC President’s Cup Academic Bowl winners

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - A record number of regional high schools competed in the 2013 President’s Cup Academic Bowl held at West Kentucky Community and Technical College on January 10.

Calloway County took home the top prize with Paducah Tilghman, Graves County and Marshall County winning second through fourth place trophies, respectively.

Other participating schools were Ballard Memorial, Caldwell County, Fulton County, Heath, Lone Oak, Madisonville-North Hopkins, Murray and St. Mary.

““These teams represent some of the best and brightest students in our region, and it is a wonderful opportunity to showcase their knowledge in academic bowl,” said Gary Goodaker, WKCTC professor of mathematics and vice president of the West Kentucky Academic Association. “We at WKCTC are proud to bring attention to their hard work and dedication to academic competition.”
