Kentucky ranks 7th nationally in NBPTS certification results

(KFVS) - Kentucky teachers were recently awarded the National Board Certification in the class of 2012.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards announced that 268 Kentucky teachers were awarded. The achievement recognizes these educators among the top in the profession and promises to improve student learning and achievement in classrooms across the state.

Kentucky is ranked 7th in the number of teachers earning National Board Certification in the class of 2012. The top ten states with the highest number of teachers achieving National Board Certification in 2012 were North Carolina, Washington, Illinois, California, Arkansas, South Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, Maryland, and New York. Nationally, 4,980 teachers achieved certification. This brings the total certified up to 102,237. Kentucky has made tremendous progress and is ranked 10th overall in the total number of teachers in the U.S having earned National Board Certification.

Filmmaker Spike Lee to speak at Murray State lecture series

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Murray State University has announced the featured speaker for their 2013 Presidential Lecture Series will be African-American filmmaker Spike Lee.

The lecture will be on Monday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m., in Murray State’s Lovett Auditorium. The lecture is free. MSU students, faculty and staff, and the general public are encouraged to attend.

Fearless, honest and dedicated to his cause, Lee does not shy away from speaking his mind. In his lecture, “An Evening with Spike Lee: America Through My Lens,” Lee discusses the history, current status and future of America as he sees it. Touching on race relations, stereotypes in Hollywood, and social and political agendas, Lee leaves it all on the table as only he can.

'Duck Dynasty' coming to Calloway Co. High School May 11

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The Calloway County Football team recently announced the stars of the hit TV show on A&E, “Duck Dynasty,” will be in Murray for an event to benefit Calloway County Football on May 11.

“We are thrilled to have this event and these great men in our school," head football coach Brad Lawson said. "Duck Dynasty is one of the most popular shows on television now and to have them in our gym benefiting our football program, it’s just amazing. It’s just going to be a great night for Calloway County High School, our program, and our community."

Scheduled to appear are Phil Robertson, Willie Robertson and Si Robertson.

As a high school athlete, Phil Robertson was all-state in football, baseball, and track and attended Louisiana Tech on a football scholarship. There he played ahead of four-time Super Bowl winning and Hall of Fame quarterback from the Pittsburgh Steelers Terry Bradshaw.

Murray PD: Report of weapon at school actually pellet gun for squirrel extermination

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The Murray Police Department responded to a call Tuesday, January 8 of a man near Murray Elementary School carrying what appeared to be a weapon.

Police say the received the call around 11:40 a.m. They say the school was placed on lockdown and a MPD School Resource officer at the elementary school alerted other officers.

According to police, the suspect was detained for investigation and it was determined  that the alleged weapon was in fact a pellet gun the man had been using to exterminate squirrels.

Police say the all clear was given at the school and at no time were any students in any danger.

MSU to host 2013 Murray State High School Fishing Open March 3

CALLOWAY COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Murray State University announced it will host the 2013 Murray State High School Fishing Open on Sunday, March 3 in partnership with FLW, The Bass Federation and the Bluegrass State Games.

The winning team will receive a $2,000 scholarship to attend Murray State while providing all teams the chance to fish Kentucky Lake in advance of the first ever bass-fishing state championship sanctioned by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

While the tournament is open to student anglers from every state, the highest-finishing team from Kentucky will be invited to participate in a 2013 Student Angler Federation/FLW High School Fishing Conference Championship and may ultimately advance to the SAF/FLW High School Fishing National Championship for the chance to earn a $10,000 scholarship ($5,000 per student).

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Murray Head Start was recently selected to participate in a national Head Start program and held its first health care institute at Graves County Central Elementary School, hosting Head Start parents from both the Graves County and Mayfield Independent school districts.

“It was a huge success,” said Murray Head Start director Carol Elder. “There was not an empty seat in the house,” added Whitney Pile, RN and health and nutrition specialist for Murray Head Start.

The Office of Head Start National Center on Health-University of California at Los Angeles Health Care Institute designed the program to empower and enhance parents’ self-esteem by providing them with tools and confidence to actively engage and participate in their child’s health care needs, according to the UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Murray graduate to release new book series

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - A Murray State graduate recently released his "Guide to Success" series, daily desk calendars in hardback or paperback book form which can be used year after year.

Dr. James Allen Harryman, writing under the name James Allen, used his 30 years of experience as a student of life, education and daily interactions with people as a psychotherapist and educator, to use the daily readings to spark in the reader a desire and motivation for a successful life.

Originally from western Kentucky, James is now living in rural southeast Missouri. He attained his BS in Communications in 1983, his MA in Psychological Counseling in 1989 and his PhD in Psychological Counseling in 2000.
