Students from Southwest Calloway Elementary competed at Regional Governor's Cup

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Southwest Calloway Elementary School students competed in the Regional Governor's Cup competition on March 19.

The competition was at Jonathan Creek Elementary. The Southwest Lakers Academic team placed second among the Future Problem Solvers and fourth in the Quick Recall Competition.

Kati Beth Wyant won first place and Kirsten Houston won fifth place in the categories of Written Assessment and Science Assessment.

Katie Allen won fourth place and Suzanna Grady won fifth place in the Language Arts Assessment.

Avery Wilmurth won third place in the Arts and Humanities Assessment.

The team finished fourth in the overall scoring.

Speech team at CCMS ends season with success

Speech team at CCMS ends season with success

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The Calloway County Middle School speech team ended their season with six state tournament semi-finalists.

The team attended the Speech League State Tournament in Bowling Green, Ky. where 19 students competed in the event March 18-19.

Clara Arnold placed sixth in the state in Poetry Interpretation.

The six semi-finalists included improvisational duo team Andrea McCormack and Stephanie McClain, duo acting team Jami Foster and Holland Tetrev, Julie Revell in broadcasting and Marlee Barrett in solo acting. The semi-finalists ranked among the top 18 performances in the state.

Other members of the team include Audree Harper, Koby Springer, Halee Bergman, Tyler Sirls, Tanna Roberson, Sarai McCallon, Cheyenne Bucy, Hailey Robinson, Kalea Anderson, Kaylee Lax, Sam Morehead and Maddie Rose.

The team is coached by Jennifer Dunnaway, Eric Klotz and Mitchell Hultman.

Lowes Elementary 1st grader benefits from iPad

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - A first grader at Lowes Elementary School, born with no arms, will benefit from a donated iPad.

Natalie Baldwin was born with Amelia Syndrome. When Scott Green and Jim Heath of Bayer CropScience heard she could benefit from an iPad, they donated one.

"This iPad will lessen some of her challenges," Cheryl Goodman, principal at Lowes Elementary said. "Especially when she gets tired, this modern technology can be used to help."

According to Goodman, Baldwin is determined, independent and able to do whatever other students do because her parents raised her that way.

CCHS students place high at FBLA Regional Competition

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Students in the Calloway County High School chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America placed in the Regional Competition on Wednesday, March 23.

The CCHS chapter is the largest in region one with 191 student members.

Students in Murray Independent, Calloway Co. schools win 2011 Character Award

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Students win the 2011 Character Award from the Character Counts Coalition of Murray and Calloway County.

Each spring teachers nominate students based on the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

A celebration for the winning students is planned for Saturday, March 26 at the Calloway County Middle School from 9 a.m.

Fourth grader wins first place in Valentine box competition

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Fourth grader Gunner Smith won first place in the class Valentine box competition.

Smith made an octopus Valentine box. He is a student in Amy Whisman's homeroom at Southwest Calloway Elementary School.

CCMS 6th graders use microscopes, learn about organization of life

CCMS 6th graders use microscopes, learn about organization of life

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Sixth graders at Calloway County Middle School studied plant and animal cells under a microscope in science class.

Students used a dissected chicken wing to observe cells, tissue, organs and organ systems. The observation is part of a study on the organization of life. They will finish the study by researching each organ system and presenting it to their classmates.

The sixth graders are in Elizabeth Sullivan's science class.
