Murray State QB named player of the week by five national organizations

Murray State QB named player of the week by five national organizations

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Murray State University announced Tuesday their quarterback, Casey Brockman, has been honored as the player of the week by five national organizations.

Brockman was named the Co-National Player of the Week by the "The Sports Network," the National Player of the Week by the College Sporting News, FCSfootballnetwork.com and collegesportsmadness.com and National Quarterback of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards.

The university says this is the third time in the past two seasons that Brockman was honored on the national level.

According to the university, the Murray, Ky. native broke four school records in leading the Racers to a 58-27 victory over Tennessee State in a 2011 home opener. Brockman finished the game 45-of-67 for 600 yards and seven touchdowns. He also caught a 15-yard touchdown pass.

Racers ranked 24th in FCS Top 25 poll

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Murray State University announced Monday that for the first time since the end of the 2002 season, Murray State reached the national rankings.

The Racers are currently ranked 24th in this week's The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Top 25 poll. MSU is also ranked 27th in the FCS Coaches poll.

The university says the Racers have been receiving votes all season, but cracked the poll after a convincing 58-27 victory over Tennessee State University evening at Stewart Stadium. The last time the Racers appeared in the national polls was at the end of the 2002 season, the last time MSU won the OVC championship.

The Racers will play their first game as nationally ranked team Thursday evening as they travel to face UT Martin. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Graham Stadium.

U.S. Coast Guard offers boating safety tips for hunters

U.S. Coast Guard offers boating safety tips for hunters

(KFVS) - The United States Coast Guard is offering boating safety tips for hunters.

The Coast Guard says capsizing and falling overboard into cold water are major hazards for hunters. During hunting seasons, most waters are cold enough for a serious hypothermia threat.

They say responsible hunters need to be aware of the dangers and follow a few simple rules to make hunting on the water safer and more enjoyable. The tips include:

  • Leave a float plan with someone at home, describing where you are going, who you are with and when you expect to return.
  • Transport firearms to the boat unloaded, cased, muzzle first, with the action open.
  • Always wear an approved and properly fitted life jacket when in a boat.
  • Carry a throwable flotation device in case someone falls overboard.
  • Stow visual distress signals on board.
  • Know the weather forecast for the area. High winds can be dangerous.
