Application deadline approaching for KYTC Engineering Scholarships

(KFVS) - The application deadlines for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Engineering Scholarship Programs are quickly approaching

Each year, the Cabinet awards 10 to 20 new civil engineering scholarships and five to 10 new engineering technology scholarships. A civil engineering scholarship may be worth up to $44,000.

According to KYTC, there's job placement after graduation and the opportunity for a potentially rewarding career. In fact, many current and former Cabinet leaders were scholarship recipients -- including Transportation Cabinet Secretary Mike Hancock and State Highway Engineer Steve Waddle

The Engineering Technology Scholarship Program is in its fifth year and prepares students for careers with the Transportation Cabinet after graduation. Each engineering technology scholarship student receives $2,500 per semester to complete an Associate's Degree in Civil Engineering Technology.

KYTC: Crews made good progress pre-treating highways before freezing rain, sleet move in

(KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says highway crews have made good progress in their effort to pre-treat area highways in preparation for freezing rain and sleet that is expected to sweep across the region on Thursday.

Crews in some counties plan to continue working until dark tonight to cover as many miles of roadway as possible.

A wintry mix starting in the Mississippi River border counties of Kentucky around sunrise and moving eastward through the day has the potential to create hazardous driving conditions. Drivers are advised to religiously monitor the local weather forecast for changes in the track of this winter storm and monitor area news media for road condition reports through the day on Thursday.

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews plan to pre-treat highways to prepare for the chance of freezing rain and sleet on Thursday morning.

The forecast is calling for a significant chance of sleet and freezing rain between about 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., CST, Thursday morning with temperatures going from mid-20’s around daybreak to mid to upper 30’s by noon, Thursday.

Highway crews will pre-treat roads Tuesday and Wednesday.  Crews expect to be on the road spraying brine from about 8 a.m. until about dark each night.

Drivers are advised to be alert for slow moving trucks and escort vehicles as crews go about their work.

Pre-treating of roadways involves running water through salt in a brine generator.  This produces a brine solution that is then sprayed on road surfaces.  The water evaporates leaving a fine powder of salt that then becomes available to be activated in the early hours of a snow/ice event.

Spill leaves North 4th Street in Murray hazardous for driving

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reports hazardous driving conditions on KY 2075/North 4th Street after a vehicle left an oil or hydraulic fluid spill.

This is along about a ½ mile section of KY 2075/North 4th Street between Andrus Drive and Bee Creek Bridge  north of Murray’s downtown area.

The KYTC Calloway County Highway Maintenance Crew has spread #11 stone along this section in an effort to absorb the oil and improve traction for vehicles.

Due to the threat of rain and the continued hazard posed by an oil slick along  KY 2075/North 4th Street in Murray, the KYTC Calloway County Highway Maintenance Crews say they have placed message boards at each end of this section to alert motorists to potential traction issues.

WESTERN KENTUCKY (KFVS)  - Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1 Highway Crews plan to pre-treat area highways to prepare for a threat of freezing rain, sleet, and/or snow that is expected to sweep through the region on Thursday night into Friday morning.

Drivers are urged to closely monitor the local weather forecast for updates as the winter weather system approaches. KYTC says drivers should be alert for slow moving trucks during daylight hours today and Thursday as crews go about their work spraying brine to prepare roadways for this event.

Pre-treating involves spraying a brine solution on roadways that dries to leave a fine powder of salt. That salt coating is then available to be activated as precipitation starts to fall during the early hours of a snow/ice event.
